really big happened. south carolina senator jim demint announced today he'll be leaving the senate. he'll not be there anymore. he's leaving to head a think tank called the heritage foundation where he stands to make something like ten times his current salary. yay for jim demint, good money. kind of. it's good for him, but it's really good for his colleague, republican senate leader mitch mcconnell. you see, jim demint is not your ordinary senator. he's like the grover norquist of the senate. he's the guy the other republican senators are really afraid of. and that is because more so than anyone else and definitely more than any other republican politician, demint is behind the tea party strategy of purifying the republican party in the cleansing fire of party primaries. demint created this pac called the senate conservativist fund, a pac he made into a super pac which makes it more super and exists to help conservative republicans beat other republicans. jim demint, resigning from the senate. going to take over as head of the heritage foundation. he is a great free market defender of capitalism. what do you make of jim demint leaveliing the senate? >> i think there's two ways to look t a it. the way i look at it, i've jokingly said he's going to a better place. but i really am serious about that in the sense that it's a promotion. he's going to a big microphone. we will be a national spokesman for free markets, for libertarian conservative principles, for the constitution, heritage has a great 30, 40-year history of being on the right side of these issues. i think jim demint will be a great spokesman for them. >> he said that conservatism has to spread more publicly and that's one reason he's going. he wasn't happy with the 2012 elections. do you think conservatism just didn't make the case in the elections last november? >> we always have to do a better job at how we speak about liberty, the constitution and how inclusive it is and how it offers things to people who have not yet experienced the fruits of liberty. so i think we c

at the right you see jim demint, a guy the late tim russert once said i can't believe jim demint is a senator. he is the leader, the ramrod of all those right wing challenges. he put up ron johnson to beat mitch mcconnell because he's too liberal. he's leaving, quitting his senate seat, giving it up, to run the heritage foundation. we have other stuff coming up, but let's start with that. >> first of all, he's going to make a lot more money. ed fuelner, who is leaving, makes $1 million a year. demint has a net worth of $140,000. secondly, the leadership has tried to rein him in. they've said, you can't go out and go after these conservative republicans with really conservative republicans in primaries because you're setting us up to lose senate seats. now that he's out of there, he can become a kind of cross between grover norquist and the jim demint he always was. he can drive these hard right ideas, but he can also sponsor hard right candidates in republican primaries. i think he thinks he's going to be more important at the heritage foundation than he is in the senate. >> let me ask you ab
